WORLD SENIOR CITIZENS DAY

World Senior Citizens Day is celebrated every year on August 21st. It was proclaimed for the first time on 14 December 1990 by the United Nations General Assembly.  The day is celebrated to raise awareness of factors and issues affecting older adults and the prevention of abuse.

“World Senior Citizen Day is Friday, August 21, 2020.”

Why is World Senior Citizens Day Celebrated?

The reason for celebrating this day is to thank the seniors in our families and communities. Senior citizens do a lot for their families and are rarely appreciated for their efforts.  They are always sensitive, protective, and selfless towards their children and grandchildren. For this alone, they need recognition and appreciation.

History of World Senior Citizens Day

On August 19, 1988, President Ronald Reagan issued a presidential statement appointing August 21 as National Senior Citizens Day to recognize the contributions of seniors to our country. In his speech to the nation, he gave all the reasons why we should celebrate older Americans.

It is undeniable that seniors in the history of our country have made great contributions and continue to pave the way for the rest of the population every day. Seniors continue to offer age-defying services, from space to politics and give positive examples to all younger generations who admire them.

The recognition of National Senior Citizens Day is the perfect way to celebrate these contributions and remind seniors that they are an important and vital part of our country.

How to Celebrate Senior Citizens’ Day?

Spend time in a retirement/nursing home

One of the most rewarding things you can do is go to a retirement home. Sit down and talk with the residents. Play games and participate in activities. You can change a senior’s life definitively, by spending time with them.

Contact an older family member

When was the last time you spoke with an older family member? Maybe your parents, grandparents, aunts, or uncles. If you cannot see them in person, call them and tell them how much you appreciate them.

Have fun

Are you a senior citizen?  TODAY everything revolves around you! Live! Make yourself happy!  Spend time with your favorite people! Do what you want!  Whatever makes you happy! JUST DO IT!  Today is dedicated to you! You deserve it!

Why World Senior Citizen Day is Important?

Seniors give us advice

Seniors have a lot more life experience than we do.  They are superb at giving us life tips and their wisdom and advice are precious to us.  We can learn a lot from them.

Seniors give generously

Most of us know from experience that seniors are naturally more generous. They donate more to charity than any other age group. They have more time to volunteer. We appreciate how much they care about their friends and family, and this is a quality we love about seniors.

Seniors give us good things

Because of their generous and caring nature, seniors make us feel special. They take great joy in coddling us with love and forbidden sweets. Many of us remember that grandparent that spoiled us. To all the grandparents or loved ones who gave us candy, fed us well or spoiled us, we salute you and appreciate you!

Conclusion

World Senior Citizens Day is an opportunity for us to appreciate the hard work that every senior does every day.  A little appreciation goes a long way.

Maintaining the independence of seniors can greatly boost their self-esteem. If senior citizens live alone, without great social or family contact, this creates risks for our seniors.  Companionship is vitally important!

Lack of companionship and social interaction increases the risk of depression and other mental illnesses. We must check on our seniors regularly to meet their needs and try to keep them joyful.
